Free (except for booze)
Dolores Park is one of those special places where you feel like you can be as weird as you want in public. So many people of so many different stripes flock here whenever the sun comes out. At times it almost feels like the environment at Burning Man: hula hoopers and hammocks are seen in droves, along with all states of dress that you can imagine. Best people-watching (and dog-watching) in the city.
Dolores is also known as “Turn Up park”, so named for the availability of pretty much anything you could want: Pizza, beer, craft cocktails (yeah there is seriously a guy in an apron who walks around taking cocktail orders--and they’re actually good!), any form of marijuana, etc.
Get there in the early afternoon on a sunny day and set up a small camp. Bring a blanket, a bunch of wine or a cooler of beer, and people watch. San Francisco, as if it cannot make up its mind, can get chilly even a gorgeous, summer-like day, so definitely bring a fleece just in case.
Be sure to get a rum coconut if possible from Michael the Coconut Guy --he’s on Yelp.
Just show up! But try to get there early afternoon to get a good spot.
Yep, we vetted it already.
